The Vision

56 Elm St. is a place of spiritual, emotional, and physical nourishment for women of older years. The owner also believes that younger women -- her own staff, as well as others who will be encouraged to visit -- will find the residents a continuing source of inspiration.

The Owner

Jill Wallace has over 25 years of experience in helping people find meaning during significant and sometimes traumatic periods of their lives.  She spent 10 years at the helm of the Bath-Brunswick Hospice, five years training volunteers at Portland's Center for Grieving Children, and most recently, several years as a professional social worker.

Her decision to open her home to the elderly was a very personal one. Her own mother, while still in good health and very active, is 85 years old. The sort of assisted living facility that is 56 Elm St. is the sort of household Jill would want for her own mother. For Jill, that household goes far beyond what is usually associated with assisted living. It is designed to be a family environment that also offers staffing 24 hours a day, housekeeping services, home cooked meals, assistance with personal care and daily needs, transportation to medical appointments and shopping, and management of medications.

Making a House a Home

The House

56 Elm St. has a lovely large living room that can be used for family gatherings, holiday celebrations, weekly sewing circles and storytelling or musical groups. There is plenty of space to leave a project set up or a puzzle half done.

Private rooms each have their own half bath, telephone, and cable hookup.  The kitchen is the heart of the house, with a large dining table and workspace set up to include whoever wishes to participate.

The small living room has a computer with Internet access for the residents, community TV, lots of books and cozy corners.

Various residents have brought their pets over the years so you may also find a cat coming over to be patted.

The Gardens

The deck on the back of the house is sheltered on three sides and opens into a courtyard that leads to the back yard.  In the yard are magnificent old trees (like the one below), lovely flower gardens with benches and sitting areas, and a large vegetable garden.  Residents are encouraged to participate in the family gardening or to take charge of their own plot.
